POWER SET stands for Powerful Opportunities for Women Eager and Ready for Science, Engineering & Technology.
What is POWER SET?
A unique program for high school girls that provides the tools, academic support and mentoring needed to pursue educational and career opportunities related to STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
What do POWER SET members do?
POWER SET members get more than just academic support and career guidance. They also get information about college scholarship opportunities, and learn from noted speakers from industry and academia. Women professionals from NPI partner industries provide mentoring to POWER SET members, who in turn, mentor younger students in their school or community. NPI and school sponsors arrange visits to college and university campuses and NPI partner industries. Members assist with local community service and community development events, which gives them practical experience in working with others.
Who can join POWER SET?
For the El Campo POWER SET, eligible members are sophomores, juniors, or seniors who have a 3.85 or higher GPA (on a 4.0 scale), have shown a strong aptitude for math and/or science by having made Level III on their math or science STAAR test from the previous year or have met TSI exemption with their SAT/ACT scores, and are currently enrolled in college readiness classes (at least two Pre-AP or AP classes). Members will be selected on the basis of a written application and personal interview.
The pearls of POWER SET
Pearls are the world's oldest gems, treasured for centuries for their smooth finish and warm glow, and are often the first jewles young women receive. Highly prized for their myth and perceived power, pearls represent the ideals of POWER SET: overcoming adversity through hard work, persistence, and tenacity. Pearls also signify purity, perfection and feminine charm. Each POWER SET member receives a pearl necklace which shows the world her commitment to the program and its goals.
